Europa Prime is part of UniVRsal, a collaboration between MXTreality & TERC to broaden participation in informal STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) learning for all, with a special focus on autistic and other neurodivergent learners through the magic offered via virtual reality.

europa universal

You will again look out a window, this time at a vast ocean, believed to contain twice the water of all Earth's oceans combined… and there await the Minos, the first intelligent alien life form ever found, ready to chat

with you.

The Depths

The observatory is the maximum depth you'll physically be able to virtually travel...

but fret not, you can go deeper via a three-dimensional visualization room or by remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).

Beneath

the ice shell

Europa’s outer ice shell is 10 to 15 miles (15 to 25 kilometers) thick. You will descend through the ice, via a supersonic elevator shaft, to a mysterious subsurface ocean.

The Surface

of EUROPa

As you stare out the window, Europa’s icy surface will shine brightly with reflected light, and Jupiter will hang majestically in the sky.

The average temperature will be a bone chilling -260°F.  But luckily, you'll be safe inside the base station, at least until you descend through the ice!

Can you help identify which Minos need tagging and perfect your aim?

Hyrdrothermal

Vents

And dotting the ocean floor, you’ll discover hydrothermal vents, providing energy to heat the water… and support the Minos and the rest of an exotic ecosystem.

Ocean

Floor

Another 40 to 100 miles (60 to 150 kilometers) down, you reach the ocean floor. At the bottom of the largest water ocean in our solar system, the deep sea pressure is likely to be only a bit more than found on Earth's deepest ocean trenches, owing to the lower gravity of Europa.
