TERC is a non-profit science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education research and development company in Cambridge, MA. TERC has a passion for social justice and strives to create level playing fields for all learners, reaching more than three million students every year. The Educational Gaming Environments group (EdGE) at TERC designs and studies STEM-learning games and technology tools for differentiated and adaptive learning. Founded in 2009, EdGE continues to use innovative methods in design and research to (a) grow a suite of STEM learning games and (b) help inform the field about how game-based learning can be used to reach ALL learners, including those with cognitive and learning differences, such as Autism, ADHD, and executive function (EF) challenges. Europa Prime was designed, developed, and researched as part of the NSF project  (DRL-2005447), Broadening Participation in Informal STEM Learning for Autistic Learners and Others through Virtual Reality.

FOUNDATIONAL CONCEPTS

INCLUSIVE 

The game is inclusive, co-designed with and by neurodivergent learners to ensure it is welcoming to a broad audience, including players with sensory, attention, and/or social issues. Nothing about us without us.

CUSTOMIZABLE

The game integrates design elements and offers setting controls so players can customize their experience: sound, brightness, colors, user controls, subtitles, and more.

STEM

The game is based on science and designed to build awareness of and interest in STEM. The game includes science fiction elements, but they are extrapolations from what is known or what there is evidence to suggest about Europa.

AFFORDANCES

The game design focused on affordances of VR, such as taking players somewhere they can’t otherwise go and offering extensive control, but also AR on phones, 3D models on PCs, and LITE versions on any device.
